Quality Engineer A note of
common sense when you apply surge suppression on AC power, phone lines, data
lines (excluding 10BASET and 100BASET)
Always tie three to four knots in your low voltage wires between the
surge suppression and the equipment you are tying it in on. On AC plug in tie one knot in the cord
between your UPS/power strip surge suppressor and the equipment. Back in the
day when there were no surge suppression for phone lines, the MA Bell
engineers would tie knots in the phone line.
It was either that, or you fried your ear by lightning. Obviously this very old concept enhances
surge suppression and forces them to work 150% better than they were
originally designed. The true answer
is this; lightning is high frequency and has a lot of pressure behind
it. If there is a 90 degree angle in
the wire, there is a good chance that it might burst the wire, not your ear
drum. Obviously if you have a surge
suppression device and it has a ground wire, there would be an alternative
path way for lightning to bi-pass your equipment and your ear. That makes sense. Curtis Carsey with Classic Protection that
installs and repairs fire alarm, CCTV, and Access control equipment practices
this every day. Each new technician
that comes on board is re-educated the right way of doing things. One of these things is tying knots in
between the surge suppression and the zones, Bells, NAC circuit wires
including the RJ31X areas. Another
area he is apply this practice of tying one appliance knot is on the phase,
neutral and ground wire between the surge suppression and the wire feeding
his fire alarm panel which reduces false alarms considerably. Now think
about it. Wouldn’t it be logical to go around your house, your office and
anywhere else you have phone lines and equipment to tie a knot in the
cord? Even if you have nothing on it,
it is better than nothing. I will tell
you what is better than nothing; you actually have surge suppression on the
equipment as well. If you are
dealing with lightning issues, backup generator issues, direct strikes on
buildings, or just fed up and you just need someone to hear you regarding
your power quality issue, call 727-823-6100. If you have
a fire alarm, CCTV, gate Access or Card access issue you can call Curtis
