How come no one even bothers to tell anyone how to install
DSL-Pacifiers Surge Suppressors for Burglar alarm panels much less tell you
how to ground them? Where is the
value added service? You can rely
on Stormin Protection to help you with all your Security Systems Power
Quality Installations. The drawing above is designed for in-line series RJ31X
DSL- Pacifier surge protection.
Unlike what you are using, this device when blown, opens. Other devices will short to ground, (no
filtering). Other name brand
products that short will have a piece of metal straight through your
protection and into your panel for that big bolt of lightning to travel
right on through. To ground the surge suppressor, we by-pass the panel
with the ground wire and tie it to the (AC) R-15 center screw ground. The single outlet surge suppressor
prevents the feed back loop transit surge from going back towards into the
panel and also prevents arcing across the coils on the tap-transformer.
Your tap-transformer or power supply has a 12-volt low voltage wire going
to the panel. Tie three knots in
the power wire closest to the panel.
On the telephone wire between the panel and the RJ31X surge
DSL-suppressor; tie three to seven knots in the telephone wire. What we have done is raised the
impedance of the panel and reduce the pathway of least resistance to
ground. Does your panel need to be
grounded? I don’t think so even if
NEC calls for it because your surge suppression device (RJ31X) became the
extension to your PC board, and now your panel is grounded, safely and
indirectly. There is no since in
creating a ground loop in to your panel with no protection from the case
groundside. Keeping your protection devices at least six inches away from
your panel. This will insure that
no transit surges, lightning induce trauma can reach your panel. You should expect from this design that
your false alarms will drop dramatically during thunder and lighting
seasons. The design of the RJ31X
is also a filter and will filter out noises. If you have any questions please feel free to call me.
